How to Remove 5 Common Carpet Stains READ THIS INFORMATION
When you hear the words; “Mom, the cat’s been sick again” and you know it’s on your brand new cream carpet, don’t panic! Read on for a quick guide on how to remove the five most common carpet stains, quickly and easily.
Pet Stains
Since we’ve just brought this one up (or rather the cat did), we might as well cover this first. For pet stains such as urine or poop, the first thing you will need to do is to remove the excess material, either by mopping with a kitchen towel or by picking it up with a plastic bag and disposing of it properly. You need to be careful not to work it into the carpet more than it is, otherwise it will be harder to get out, especially if it gets into the pad underneath.
Many people advocate the use of ammonia, but this isn’t recommended since dog urine contains ammonia and can attract your dog to the same spot to mark it again.
What you need to do is to mix a solution of white vinegar and water and use this to blot the stain. Continue to do this using paper towels or a clean cotton cloth until the stain starts to fade. Once this has been done, sprinkle some baking soda over it and leave it for an hour before vacuuming it up.
Blood
When dealing with a blood stain, just rub it with an ice cube and mop it up with a kitchen towel as it melts. You don’t want the carpet to get too wet though so be patient and it will come out in the end.
You can also add two teaspoons of washing up liquid to a spray bottle and top up with cold water. Spray this onto the stain and blot with a kitchen towel.
Oil Spills
Nothing could appear worse than an oil spill, which might happen if someone has walked oil in from the garage. If there is an excess amount then carefully scrape it up while trying to avoid pushing it into the carpet. Next, cover it with a good handful of cornstarch or baking soda to pull the oil up out of the fibers. While you leave this to do its work for 10 minutes, mix up a tablespoon each of washing up liquid and white vinegar along with two cups of water. Now you are ready to vacuum the powder up, liberally spray the liquid onto the stain and blot until dry. After that, you need to blot the area with cold water to remove any residue.
Nail Varnish
If you accidentally knock over a bottle of nail varnish, all is not lost. Simply take some nail varnish remover and dab it onto the stain with a cloth, remembering to work in from the edge. It may take a few attempts to remove it though, so be patient.
Spilled Wine
After mopping up the excess with a paper towel, use normal club soda on the stain and blot it until it’s gone. If the stain has already dried, dab 3% Hydrogen Peroxide onto it which should lift it out. This guide uses simple household products and they generally do work. If, however, you have a problem stain which is beyond the methods shown above then look for carpet cleaners Chicago.
