Heat pumps are amazing machines. They can move heat from the air or underground into your home. They can also pull hot air out of your home during the summer and move it outside.

Here’s how they work and how to keep them running smoothly with some simple maintenance.

How They Work


A heat pump is a device that moves heat from the air or ground from one location to another. When you think of a heat pump, you probably think of a heating device only, but these pumps pump in both directions. In other words, they can be used to heat or cool a home.

How?


By absorbing heat from the ground, water, or air and moving it through piping that either cools or warms the air inside.

An air-source heat pump, for example, pulls in outside air into a special pump and sends it into your home (to heat it). It can also cool the home by pumping the air through refrigerant-filled coils, similar to what’s used in modern refrigerators.

The fans themselves cost little to operate, and typically generate much more heat than the electricity used to power them.

Air is cleaned with a filtration system and then sent through ductwork into the home. The reverse can also be done in the winter, pulling hot air out of the home and pushing it outside. Air can also move in both directions, pulling it out of the home, while sending it through refrigeration and recirculating it back into the living area.

Ground-source absorption pumps work similarly, except that they pull heat from the ground and send it through the system, rather than rely on ambient air temperature.

Some systems use heated water and ammonia to heat or cool the home (the ammonia is boiled off and never actually circulates into the home).

These systems, while lower maintenance, are not maintenance free. They still need a competent technician to service them. And, they sometimes require HVAC products similar to what you might find on traditional systems.

Maintenance Procedures


Some common problems with heat pumps include low airflow, leaky or noisy ductwork, various problems with the ambient air temps, the ground temps or water temperature control device, rattles, and grinding noises.

If you’re not mechanically inclined, it’s probably best that you avoid doing this work yourself and hire a technician to come out to the home.

If you think you can handle it, then one of the first things you should do is reset the motor on the pump. Check the ignition system for any obvious issues like a blown fuse or a breaker.

Check the thermostat to make sure that it’s working properly. You should also make a habit of changing the filter when it’s dirty - about once every three months.

A grinding noise usually means bad bearings on the motor or fan or both. Time to replace the assembly. Rattles might be loose parts (screws) which can be tightened easily enough. And, sometimes if ductwork comes apart, you will get all manner of crazy noises.

Aside from tightening, replacing filters, or doing basic checks, the next step in the troubleshooting procedure is to call a professional that’s experienced in servicing your particular make and model of heat pump.
